Many consider Marika Mäkelä to be one of Finland’s greatest modern artists. She has been a professional painter since the 1970s, and her latest exhibition, Jewels of Excavation, is now on display at Galerie Anhava until the beginning of March.
Gallerist Ilona Anhava has said that Mäkelä’s paintings can not only be viewed with pleasure but that they can also be felt, smelt and almost heard. She describes that one can become totally immersed in the paintings because they create intellectual and physical pleasure.
Mäkelä’s most recent works are painted reliefs on wood panels. The works are small and true to her unique style, but completely different from her previous works. The newest artworks are exquisite; the paintings resemble embroidery or tattoos.

Change is what Mäkelä is known for. Her paintings always have new subjects and themes and she may return to old subjects, but change them so that the viewer is surprised.
In conjunction with the exhibition a book of Marika Mäkelä’s work was published. The book has 124 pictures of her work, with a text written by Timo Valjakka.
