A round-up of some of this season’s trends for interior decor.

Eclecticism

Retro and vintage looks continue to be popular, but increasingly these are being mixed with up-to-the-minute modern furniture. The look can be difficult to get right, but there’s no reason why Granny’s wooden dining table can’t work with a set of quirky Habitat chairs. The trick is to minimise clutter and focus on a few statement pieces.

Autumn blues

Autumn is normally associated with the warm colours of turning leaves, but this year intense Mediterranean blues are what the style-conscious crave. Look out for deep blue in bold fabric patterns and cosy textures such as velvet, chenille or wool, such as Pentik’s ‘Rumba’ range.

Bold botanicals

Bright floral prints were everywhere this summer, and the trend for botanical patterns for interior fabrics and wall coverings continues this autumn. Botanicals appear both in dynamic graphic prints suitable for modern city apartments, such as those by Marimekko and Ikea, and in softer, more antique styles which fit with a more traditional country look, in ranges by Hemtex.

Natural materials

The natural beauty of wood has always been appreciated in Finland but this year untreated wood and other natural materials like stone, metal and simple ceramics are a key interior trend. Taking inspiration from Japanese, Nordic and New England influences, natural materials and clean lines in the kitchen and bathroom give a sense of peace and warmth, and are a timeless look that can be achieved without breaking the bank.
