Where to go
Towards the World Design Capital 2012

New Year’s Eve will see a colourful, meticulously planned light spectacle projected onto Helsinki Cathedral.

The traditional New Year celebrations at Helsinki’s Senate Square will welcome 2012 and also celebrate the city becoming the World Design Capital. The highlight of the evening is an extensive light and video spectacle jointly produced by Mural Media and Agent Pekka. The turn of the year will culminate in a video presentation entitled Ylistys Helsingille (“Praise to Helsinki”), which uses a 3D architectural mapping technique, decorating Helsinki Cathedral with light.
The evening will offer various musical performances, such as The Out’n Loud choir, AiA band, Step Up Dancers, beat boxer Felix Zenger and the Finnish tango master, Jari Sillanpää. “Resolutions bar”, opening at 10 pm, is the place for making resolutions for the new year and drinking hot chocolate.
As part of the Senate Square New Year celebrations, a pre-celebration will be held at Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma for families with children. An adventure filled with light is to be set up in the empty exhibition halls with workshops, shadow puppets, light painting and a dance of shadows.
